Reverse glass painting
& gold leaf gilding

I have become fascinated by this traditional signwriters’ technique which involves the careful application of loose gold leaf onto glass to yield a lustrous and eye-catching finish unlike any other.

The incredibly delicate gold leaf is positioned with a gilders tip and then adhered to the glass with a water or oil based adhesive know as size. The gold is then gently burnished and finaly backed up with enamel paint to protect it and keep it in place. The other elements of the designs and letters are painted by hand with signwriters brushes and enamel paints.
